“This 300ft dome is a monument of gratitude to India, which is the land of origin of Vipassana and Buddha. Indian architect, Chandubhai Sompura, demonstrated the idea of the locking system of stones with grooves cut into them to interlock and hold them in place. It was SN Goenka, Vipassana teacher, who expressed his wish to build a dome without pillars in the inner hall to avoid inconvenience to meditators. Hailed as an architectural and engineering marvel, the inside of the Pagoda is hollow and serves as a very large meditation hall enabling people to practice meditation. Set to be Mumbai’s first Vipassana center, it will be inaugurated by President Pratibha Patil. The monument of peace and harmony has been built at Gorai, near Essel World. The golden Global Vipassana Pagoda, the world’s largest stone monument and the first dome in the world built without any supporting pillars, will grace the skyline of suburban Mumbai. Come February, Mumbai will add another feather to its cap.
